Amplamente aplicado na indústria de óleo e gás, o processo de Refinaria permite a maximização do retorno sobre a matéria-prima. O ponto de partida do desenvolvimento é a avaliação de qual a melhor composição de produtos que podem ser gerados a partir do insumo inicial, ao submetê-lo a uma sequência de processos. No caso de uma biorrefinaria, a ideia principal é ter biomassa como insumo, seja ela vegetal, animal ou microbiológica.
É um procedimento semelhante à construção de um quebra-cabeça: as peças são processos que se encaixam de forma sequencial e, ao final, temos diferentes produtos cujos valores separados são superiores ao valor da matéria-prima.

Widely applied in the oil and gas industry, the Refinery process allows maximizing the return on raw materials. The starting point for development is the evaluation of the best composition of products that can be generated from the initial input, by subjecting it to a sequence of processes. In the case of a biorefinery, the main idea is to have biomass as an input, whether it is vegetable, animal or microbiological.
It is a procedure similar to building a jigsaw puzzle: the pieces are processes that fit together sequentially and, in the end, we have different products whose separate values are higher than the value of the raw material.

A ideia dessa visão mais macro quando pensamos no processo de biorrefinaria não é focar apenas no produto estrela, (ou seja, aquele que traz o melhor resultado), mas sim ter o foco na composição completa. The idea of this analysis is to bring a more macro view when we think about the biorefinery process. Not focusing only on the star product (i.e., the one that brings the best result), but also focusing on the entire composition. It is okay to generate some products with low added value or even with a negative individual result, because the overall composition works well together.

Over the past years, we realized that the focus on the main product blinds researchers/entrepreneurs, and this makes the entry of many products and services that use biotechnological processes in their stages unfeasible.
The strengths and weaknesses of bioprocesses lie in their complexity, and a significant portion of high value-added products represents less than 10 or 20% of the input, bringing the need to find a destination for the others.
When working with the concept of biorefineries, we aim to extrapolate the vision of the development of the main product to a vision of the process as a whole, moving away from a product vision and obtaining a perspective of Value Creation.
